AMBASSADOR PIËT VISITS DR. REIJNTJES SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
For the last 4 years Ambassador Piët has been the Patron of the Dr. Reijntjes School for the Deaf in Sri Lanka. The ambassador and his wife have visited the school on various occasions and celebrations, most notably the 30th anniversary last year.
Mrs. Tineke de Silva, who is a Dutch lady married to a Sri Lankan husband started the school in 1984 with 2 teachers and 6 students. Today she runs a successful school educating deaf students.
The students who frequently enter at a very young age, start learning to read, write and communicate. Once the elementary education is finished the deaf students have the opportunity to follow vocational training classes. A large amount of training courses are available for them. These vary from learning about work in the garment industry, screen printing, computer skills, welding, wood work, batik, cosmetics and much more. After that the school helps them to find a job.
As the tenure of Ambassador and Mrs. Piët is coming to an end they visited the school one more time to say goodbye to Mrs. de Silva and the students. They were welcomed with open arms and pleasantly surprised with several dances as well beautiful pieces of art made by the students themselves that will make sure they will never forget de Dr. Reijntjes school for the deaf in Sri Lanka.
Ambassador and Mrs. Piët wish the Dr. Reijntjes school for the deaf all the best and much success in their future endeavors.
